那覇教区の兄弟姉妹の皆さん
今年もまたクリスマスシーズンが巡ってきました。街はすでに素敵なオブジェで美しく飾られ、クリスマスソングが独特の暖かな雰囲気を醸し出しています。北風に吹かれて襟を立てて家路を急ぐ冬の物悲しさにも増して、イルミネーションの輝きが辺りを明るく照らし、人々を心温まるワクワク感へと招き入れています。しかしそれは、単にクリスマス商戦の作り出した雰囲気ではなく、古くから、人々の心の深いところに湧き上がる幼子イエスへの柔らかで暖かな心に包み込まれるような気持ちを表わす雰囲気なのだと感じます。そのようなクリスマスの対するイメージをひと言で表すなら「平安」「平和」「安らぎ」です。そう、まさにクリスマスとは「神は私たちと共におられる」(ﾏﾀｲ1₂₃)という平和そのものの実現なのです。
ところで、今年を振り返ると「平和」という言葉ほど乱用されたワードはないように感じます。人間の関わるありとあらゆる場面、政治・経済・軍事面でも「平和」が使われました。しかしそれは必ずしも真の「平和」が実現し、目前にあるからではなく、むしろ「平和」が破壊され、人々から遠ざけられ、分断と不和、それに伴う混乱や戦乱が迫っているからでした。
しかし、いくら口先だけで平和を願っても、声をからして平和を叫び求めても、私たち自身が立ち上がって幼子イエスを探し求めなければ、幼子イエスと共なる真の平和にたどり着くことはできないでしょう。ですから、私たち人類が回心し、不平等を改め、すべての生き物が食物に事欠かないようにし、すべての人が安心して暮らせるように公正な分配を実現し、神が備えてくださった被造界を愛と調和のうちに用いて、すべての存在が尊重される地上の平和へのあゆみをまた新たに始めましょう。その努力が羊飼いや三人の博士たちと共に主イエスに出会う旅路へと連なる歩みとなるからです。
皆さんお一人おひとりが、また私たち人類共同体が、真の救い主である幼子イエスと出会い、その祝福と平和と喜びに満ち溢れた「平和の神」と常に共に在らんことを祈りつつ、みことばによって、みことばと共に祝福を送ります。
どうか、平和の神御自身が、あなたがたを全く聖なるものとしてくださいますように。
どうか、平和の主御自身が、いついかなる場合にも、あなたがたに平和をお与えくださるように。

Christmas Message 2025 – “The God of Peace” Bishop Wayne
Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Diocese of Naha,
This year the holiday season has already arrived. Cities are beautifully decorated with lovely ornaments and Christmas lights are displayed in all the stores. In some places, Christmas songs fill the air, creating a warm and special holiday atmosphere.
This special atmosphere is not something that is solely created by the extra lights and the decorations but it is rather an expression of the deeper feelings that we all have in our hearts concerning Christmas. I think that it expresses the gentle and tender emotions that we feel when we think of the birth of Jesus. If we gave a name to what we feel, the words that might come to mind are: peace, serenity, and tranquility. Indeed, Christmas is nothing less than the realization of the very peace that we proclaim when we say, “God is with us” (Matthew 1:23).
Looking back over the past year, it seems to me that no word has been used as frequently—or perhaps as carelessly—as “peace.” The term has appeared in every field of human endeavor—politics, economics, and military affairs. This is not because true peace is already being realized. Rather, in some places, in the name of peace, the opposite of peace is being created: division, discord, and confusion. In some cases, even wars are being fought.
No matter how earnestly we may desire peace or cry out for it with all our strength, we cannot reach true peace without following the teachings of Jesus. Humanity must undergo a conversion, correct inequalities, ensure that no one lacks food, achieve a fair of distribution of goods so that all may live in safety, and use the created world—given to us by God—in a loving and a harmonious way. This Christmas let us begin anew our journey towards peace on earth. This effort to make peace a reality becomes our own journey to meet the Lord Jesus, walking alongside the shepherds and the three Magi who were also looking for peace through an encounter with Jesus.
I pray that each one of you, and our entire diocesan family, may encounter the Infant Jesus—the true Savior—and be filled with his blessings, his peace, and his joy. In closing, I want to send you my Christmas blessing by using the words of Scripture:
“May the God of peace Himself make you entirely holy…
May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace in all ways. May the Lord be with you all of you.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:23; 2 Thessalonians 3:16)
